MARY YOUNG is a Canadian lingerie and loungewear brand that is decidedly unfussy and, trust us, you're going to love it (that is if you don't already!) We were drawn to the collection's clean, modern lines and super comfortable fabrics, but it's the woman behind the brand that made us fall for it. Read on to find out more about Toronto-based Designer & CEO, Mary Young.
What inspired you to start designing lingerie and was that something you'd always wanted to do?
My first dream job was [to be] a model but once I realized I wasn't going to be tall enough, I settled on fashion designer... I started designing lingerie in my fourth year at Ryerson where I studied Fashion Communications. I was working on my thesis and worked around the concept of a slow Saturday morning and what my muse would wear - cute knit sweaters with soft lingerie.
How would you describe your muse now, or the woman you're designing for?
My target woman is someone who lives an active life. She is excited about her interests and time with her friends, family and partner. She is on the go and doesn't have time to waste, whether that be changing her outfit many times a day or spending a whole day shopping. She embraces life and all it has to offer.
In an industry that has long been dominated by men and promoted a very narrow definition of what's considered sexy or feminine, brands like yours are changing the game. Thank you! Is this something you're actively fighting with your brand's marketing?
First off, thank you! It is something we are extremely passionate about and really one of the main reasons I started the brand. After studying the industry for so long I realized I never saw myself in any of the marketing for brands I knew [and I felt] out of place. I knew that I wasn't alone and I wanted to change that, and hopefully I am changing that.
Tell us more about the #selfloveclub initiative and what inspired this?
The Self Love Club is a movement that we're so excited about powering. As we state online, the club isn't us, it's not buying our garments, but rather it's you and your attitude. We are aiming to open up the dialogue within our community, and each of yours, encouraging both men and women to open up about their lives, both the good and the bad. We focus on self love and the journey of it. It's a continuous thing and we know that having support from one another will make life more enjoyable. To take our commitment to this movement to the next level, we are donating $3 from every item sold to Raw Beauty Talks, an organization that provides mentorship for programs that increase self esteem in youth.
